SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Meteorologists with the National Weather Service say that a powerful storm that swept through northern Butler County on Saturday night produced a rotating funnel cloud, but no tornado touched down.

At 7:40 p.m. Saturday a trained spotter reported that a tornado had touched down two miles southwest of Atwells Crossing, said John Darnley, a hydrometeorological technician at the weather service office in Pittsburgh.

Forecasters visited the area Sunday and could not confirm that a tornado touched down. There were no reports of damage or injuries, said Fred McMullen of the weather service Monday.

The weather service issued a tornado warning at 7:40 p.m. Saturday alerting people in northern Butler County, including Harrisville, Slippery Rock, Eau Claire and Emlenton, to take cover until 8:15 p.m.

A dispatcher at Butler County’s 911 headquarters said that the agency’s records show Slippery Rock police were dispatched to Kiester Road at 7:33 p.m. for a storm-related call.

Slippery Rock Fire Chief Ken Taggart said the department responded to a report of a funnel cloud Saturday night, but the storm had moved on by the time fire personnel got there. They did not find any downed trees or other damage in the area, he said.

The Marion Township fire department responded to a downed tree on Branchton Road, but saw no other damage, fire chief Joe Fitzgerald said.
