Brooke Schaefers

Brooke Schaefers of Butler has been selected for admission into the Master of Professional Science program at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

She is 1 of 8 students accepted into the Department of Biology and Ecology in the Marine Mammal Science track.

Schaefers is a 2017 graduate of Slippery Rock Area High School and currently is completing her senior year at Youngstown State University where she is an Honors College student majoring in biology with a minor in environmental science.

An Aquinas Academy of Pittsburgh senior and recent graduate were awarded AP Scholar awards for their success in taking College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Exams.

Senior Genevieve Archer of Renfrew earned the AP Scholar award “granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.”

2020 graduate Samuel Schirra of Butler achieved the AP Scholar with Distinction award “granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.”

Kyra Znaczko of Cranberry Township has been elected president of the Conservation Club and the Technology and Gaming Club (TAG) at the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio, for the 2020-21 academic year.

The group is one of nearly 100 active student clubs, organizations, national honor societies, and special interest groups at UF.

Six Butler County students were among 680 students who earned scholarships at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio, this fall.

The scholarships vary in requirements, with many specifying financial need, a course of study, involvement on campus or a commitment to excellence in a particular field.

- Zane Gagliardi of Butler, a graduate of Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School majoring in theater acting and directing, earned the Mary Lou Allman and Family Scholarship.

- Reed Kruger of Lyndora, a graduate of Butler Area High School majoring in theater acting and directing, earned the Joseph & Berneice Smith Non-Honors Day Scholarship.

- Alivia Leyland of Harmony, a graduate of Riverside High School majoring in arts management and entrepreneurship, earned the Kathryn Lutz Bowman Scholarship.

- Isabella Moosa of Zelienople, a graduate of Seneca Valley High School majoring in psychology and criminal justice, earned the Dr. S. Lee Whiteman Psychology Scholarship and the Reed Family Scholarship.

- Erin Neff of Valencia, a graduate of Mars Area High School majoring in neuroscience psychology and psychology, earned the Desich Family Community Impact Scholarship and the Kenneth & Lucy McCauliff Scholarship.

- Laila Tyler of Butler, a graduate of Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School majoring in theater acting and directing, earned the Theodore S. Bogardus Scholarship.

Tom Chisdock, a 1984 Slippery Rock University graduate with a degree in parks, recreation and resource management, received the 2020 Guy Bradley Award from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

Chisdock, who retired in 2019, was recognized for his career achievements as special agent in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Office of Law Enforcement.
