Butler man accused of beating his parents
A Butler man is accused of attacking his parents Saturday at their Franklin Street home in Butler.
Butler City police filed charges against John V. Ratcliff, 41, including two counts of aggravated assault. Following his arrest Saturday, Ratcliff was arraigned by District Judge Lewis Stoughton and placed in Butler County Prison on $50,000 bond.
According to the affidavit, a third party called 911 regarding a domestic incident that became physical. Police said the party identified those involved and claimed Ratcliff had fled the scene.
Police said when they arrived on scene, medics were already treating the parents’ injuries, and officers began looking for Ratcliff.
“While checking the area, Ratcliff was found laying on the creek side in the 300 block of Mercer Street,” police said. “As officers approached Ratcliff, I noticed that Ratcliff had a rock clinched in his right hand, and all his clothing was covered with splotches of blood.”
When they arrested Ratcliff, police said they smelled alcohol on his breath.
Police said they talked with Ratcliff’s parents at their home before they were taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital.
“It was stated by both that, initially, a verbal argument ensued with Ratcliff over his medication,” police said.
The parents told police the argument escalated when Ratcliff began punching his father from behind as the latter tried to walk away, according to documents. Police said Ratcliff then turned on his mother and hit her too.
“I viewed (the father’s) head to be significantly bloody from several lacerations to his head,” police said. “I also viewed (the mother’s) left arm to be in a sling that medics provided her for a possible arm fracture, and she complained of severe head pain.”
Ratcliff is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Monday before District Judge William Fullerton.
