Moniteau repeats Super Bowl title

From no titles to twin titles, the Moniteau Youth Football Association's junior program has reached the top of the ABC League.

And it's showing no signs of going away.

Moniteau's team for players ages 9 and 10 followed up its perfect season of 2004 with a 9-2 record and repeat Super Bowl victory this fall.

"Last year's team was just filled with athletes," assistant coach Randy Armagost said. "They were 10-0 and pretty much beat everybody by 30 points.

"This year, it was all about defense and running the ball. We were good enough at both to repeat as champion."

Moniteau's regular season losses this year were to A-C Valley (14-8) and Brookville (18-12). The Warriors avenged both defeats in the playoffs, knocking off A-C Valley 6-0 and Brookville 22-14.

The Super Bowl victory was a 16-8 decision over Slippery Rock.

"We returned about six exceptional athletes from last year," head coach Doug Simmons said. "At this level, that can make a big difference."

Among the top returnees were running back Andrew Armagost, lineman Jarod Hull and Joe Holfelder,

Armagost rushed for 1,200 yards and 21 touchdowns, including two TDs in the Super Bowl. He also played end and inside linebacker on defense

"Andrew was probably our best player," Simmons said.

Last year, running backs Armagost, Ethan Pry and quarterback Joey Deal combined for more than 2,000 rushing yards.

This year, running back Brent Bish had 500 yards rushing and Hayden Grasha has been at quarterback.

"Hayden made a lot of it (offense) go this year," Coach Armagost said.

Other key contributors on defense were end Kyle Davidson and safety Dustin Geagan.

Davidson was ineligible at the beginning of the season because he was beyond the league's weight limit.

"He worked hard to get under the weight limit and was able to join us for the final four regular season games," Simmons said. "He made a nice impact for us late in the year.

"Dustin had two big interceptions in the playoffs. He returned one for a touchdown against Brookville and had an interception at our 1-yard line against Slippery Rock in the Super Bowl."

Moniteau finished the regular season with the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. Had it not lost its final regular season game to A-C Valley, it would have had the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye for the second straight season.

"We played hard, but they have a good team, too," Simmons said. "They have a lot of speed and we're more of a power running team.

"Our kids responded well and won three close playoff games."

The majority of that unbeaten 2004 team moved up to Senior level (ages 11 and 12) this year and finished fourth, losing 6-0 in overtime to Redbank Valley in the semifinals.

"Our whole team will be reunited again next year," Coach Armagost said. "We should be in pretty good shape."
