BUTLERTWP — There was a Home Run Derby in Pittsburgh Monday night.

There also was one in Butler Township Tuesday night.

The Butler Township 12-year-old Little League All-Star team hit four home runs, including three during a 10-run second inning, to topple Clarion Township 13-1 in the District 25 championship game.

"This has been a strong group of kids since they were 9-years old," said Butler Township manager John Baranchak. "Hey, there is no replacing talent and this team has it. We have three guys on the bench who can start for any other team. We have power. We can hit for average."

Butler Township certainly flexed those muscles against a shell-shocked Clarion team.

After falling behind 1-0 — the first deficit it had faced and the first earned run it had given up in the four-game tournament — Butler Township responded with 10 runs in the bottom of the second inning.

David Tompkins and Chris Cotton led off the inning with back-to-back home runs and Alex Ziegler greeted Clarion relief pitcher Camron Kirkland rudely with a grand slam later in the frame.

"That's my second grand slam this year and the second of my life," Ziegler said of his line-drive slam that barely got off the ground high enough to clear the center-field fence, 200 feet away. "I didn't think it was gone."

But it was, and Butler Township was well on its way to the District 25 crown.

The run support was more than enough for Cody West, who also homered, blasting a two-run shot in the bottom of the third inning.

West was dominant throughout, striking out six in three innings.

Clarion Township scored in the top of the second when Matt Wolbert led off with a single and was plated by a double by T.J. Armstrong.

West didn't panic and neither did Butler Township.

"I was wondering how this team would respond when it fell behind," Baranchak said. "We turned around and put up our biggest inning, a 10-run inning. I couldn't be happier."

Mathew Baranchak pitched a perfect fourth inning, striking out two, to wrap up the four-inning win.

"We have four or five pitchers who literally are No. 1 guys," John Baranchak said. "We've won four of our games with three different guys."

Butler Township outscored its District 25 opponents 47-3.

Butler Township will play Monday in a six-team section tournament inSaegertown. A time and opponent is yet to be determined.

"I think we can go all the way to states," West said. "We have that kind of team that works hard and is dedicated."
