John Tissue
John Earl Tissue, 90, of Slippery Rock, passed away on Friday, August 5, 2022, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a short illness.
He was a member of Center Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock. He worked from the time he was young delivering newspapers and watching sheep overnight in the Vanderbilt area. He worked at George Sager Farms and Pizor/Wick International (both in Slippery Rock), Howard Miller, Chuck Glenn’s garage and Brain Brother’s excavating (all in Grove City), Johnstown Foundry (currently Mercer Forge), Morrison Buick in New Castle, and Wheatland Tube in Wheatland, Pa., from which he retired in 1994. He was also a Sergeant in the United States Army Motor Pool.
He was an amazing mechanic and worked on people’s cars and tractors in his spare time at home for extra income. He taught his children the importance of hard work by never being without a job more than a day or two. He was co-owner of Hilltop Century Farm with his eldest son, Robert, since 1978. He and both his sons plowed snow for many years for a number of businesses and households in the Slippery Rock area. He loved working the farm; being a mechanic; hunting; watching the occasional football game; and spending time with his family, friends and his daughter’s dogs. He enjoyed a good meal (especially at Olive Garden), a good cup of coffee and chewing gum. He was always ready with some sarcasm or a funny saying to get a laugh from people. His motto was “If you can’t have a little fun, then don’t bother getting out of bed!”
He is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, whom he married on Dec. 11, 1954, Edna Mae (Vincent); two sons, Robert (Elizabeth) and Randall, of Slippery Rock; a daughter, Holly (Bryan) Tissue-Thompson, of Slippery Rock; and close family friend Julie Fisher-Mayberry, of New Castle. He is survived by two sisters, Naomi Harr (Vanderbilt) and Helen Allen (Michigan); a brother, George Tissue (Vanderbilt); three grandsons, Shawn Tissue of Grove City, Johnathan Thompson of Greensburg and Alexander Thompson of Slippery Rock; and a step-granddaughter, Cody Elizabeth Parker (Texas). He enjoyed them all so much and was honored to help in their upbringing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorman and Nellie Patience (Morrison) Tissue; and a brother, Raymond Tissue, all of Vanderbilt.
