2 prisoners accused of violent assault on fellow inmate
Two Butler County Prison inmates are accused of beating another inmate.
Butler County detectives filed charges Wednesday against Keith P. Reges and Michael P. Reinhart, Butler County Prison inmates who police accused of beating another inmate June 29.
“(On) July 7, 2022, (I) interviewed the victim who stated that he was still suffering headaches and memory loss due to the assault,” said the investigating detective in the affidavit.
Both men are scheduled to be arraigned Friday before District Judge William Fullerton on felony counts of aggravated assault, assault by a prisoner and criminal conspiracy.
According to charging documents, the case revolves largely around video surveillance footage of the alleged assault, which happened around 3:36 p.m. June 25 in the jail multi-purpose room.
Detectives said the video shows an inmate cutting the hair of another inmate with an electric clipper, and there is one person sitting at a table behind them, waiting for a haircut. Detectives said Reinhart and Reges enter the room with a third man, who has not been charged because detectives noted that he never acted in the beating.
“Reinhart, Reges and (a third man) enter the room together and Reinhart is motioning for (the inmate waiting for his haircut) to get out,” detectives said.
Detectives said the inmate cutting hair looked over his shoulder and noticed the three, but did not engage with them and instead turned back to his work.
“Reinhart then approaches the (inmate cutting hair) from behind, winds up with his right arm and strikes (him) on the right side of the head,” detectives said.
Detectives said Reinhart threw about 33 punches and kicked him twice, and Reges joined in too.
“Reges struck the victim in excess of 15 times, kicked him several times, and toward the end of the assault, (he) had the victim on the floor in a strangulation hold while Reinhart struck the victim,” detectives said.
According to detectives, the video shows one correction officer discovering the assault, spraying pepper spray into the room and then retreating to get backup.
“At this time, (the beaten inmate) is on all fours, and Reinhart crosses the room and kicks (his) face, which appeared to knock (him) unconscious,” detectives said.
Detectives said moments after the final kick, multiple correction officers arrived, retrieved the beaten inmate from the room and secured the other inmates.
Detectives said they interviewed the beaten inmate June 29, and at the time, he had two black eyes, a cut above his left eye and a cut to his right ear.
“The victim stated he could not remember what happened to him,” detectives said.
Following their arraignment, Reges and Reinhart will be scheduled for a preliminary hearing and issued bonds, though both were already in jail for different matters.
Last year, Reges pleaded guilty to misdemeanor simple assault after beating his then-girlfriend. He is also awaiting trial for a case in which he’s accused of strangling his then-girlfriend’s mother.
Reinhart is also awaiting trial in two cases filed in 2021. In September, police arrested Reinhart and charged him with terroristic threats and criminal mischief, after officers said he threatened to kill multiple people, including the officers.
Police filed new charges against Reinhart after an Oct. 29 incident at the Cranberry Township Magistrate's Office. Police said Reinhart was brought to the magistrate for a preliminary hearing for the September case, and after the hearing, Reinhart barricaded himself in a holding area.
Police said he also had thrown chairs and other objects at officers and threatened to kill officers throughout the incident.
