Remembering what it means to be American this Fourth
We all know the story. In elementary school, we learned the labyrinthine history of the colonies and how on July 4, 1776, delegates from all 13 adopted the Declaration of Independence, the historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson.
We celebrate gaining our freedom from Great Britain with fireworks, cookouts, and maybe diving into a pool. We celebrate the birth of a truly independent America, but we must remember what it means to be American along the way.
Times are tough; there’s no denying it. Sometimes, it seems as if we are more divided now than ever before. Tales of a foreign war and supply issues pit one side against another for things neither can truly gain control over.
The Fourth of July is a chance for us to remember that we are one people, one nation. We are a place where everyone should be able to achieve their own set goals, should they put in the work needed to do so.
Let us celebrate a country with rich diversity, made of people from all backgrounds and religions, as each one can teach us lessons about ourselves that other countries never have the opportunity to learn.
While we must respect history and those who built it, it’s important to remember how the world shifts during the ebb and flow of time. A person doesn’t remain static from birth until death. We change constantly throughout our lives, and our country is no different. Stand up for the freedoms you value, whatever they may be, and respectfully acknowledge to each other that someone else’s beliefs may differ from your own.
Given the chance, our differences could become our greatest strength. The defining trait of the United States has always been our patriotism, and it’s time we remembered our love for our country if we want to set it on the right path for posterity.
Everyone can bring something different to the table. A single thread in the weaving of the flag we all love so much.
We at the Eagle wish everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July!
