Paper company avoids fine in EC
EVANS CITY — Police Chief Joe McCombs said the wayward newspapers on Van Buren Street have been removed.
McCombs said officers on Tuesday told Abitibi Paper Retriever it would be fined for each day the pile of newspapers in the lower parking lot of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church remained there after last Friday.
The donated papers had overflowed from their container and were blowing around the neighborhood.
The church collects the newspapers to be recycled for cash. The church then donates the money to Camp Lutherlyn in Franklin Township for a scholarship program that sends inner-city youngsters to the camp for free.
Abitibi cited driver issues to police and snow blockage to the church as reasons for failing to pick up the overflowing papers last Friday.
McCombs said after being threatened with the fine, which would have been set by the local district judge, the papers were picked up by the company sometime Tuesday.
