Name play continues
Once again another Karns City High School sport has started and ended with some of the same controversy that has plagued the school at other times in recent years.
For those who might not have read the letter to the editor this past fall, I will recap it briefly.
It simply was addressing the point that, if you are blessed to have the correct last name, you are elevated to play ahead of other deserving student athletes.
That seems to be the norm lately.
However, I can remember when it wasn’t that way. Former Karns City coaches such as Randy Huey, Mel Samako, Ken Loughery and Don Black — all coached different after-school activities that forged the Karns City history of always being a formidable opponent. They all would choose starters based on experience and ability.
The most disheartening thing about the current situation is, even when it is brought to the attention of school officials who are in charge of overseeing such programs, they simply close their eyes or just choose to ignore it.
I would think when you have several parents complaining to an athletic director, principal or vice principal about a coach who is supposed to be teaching and honing the skills of students, someone would pay attention.
Instead, apparently nothing is said or done to resolve the issues, causing some players to not want to attend practices or games.
And, as soon as all has been brought to the appropriate people’s attention, the solution is to kick kids off the team.
Problem solved, I guess.
