CRANBERRY TWP — Township police say a Butler man stole a woman’s wallet and put more than $700 on her credit card the same day he was arrested for shoplifting.

Jerald L. Lorenz, 34, of Butler on July 1 waived to court four felony charges: conspiracy, access device issued to another who did not authorize use, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.

Police responded to Wal-Mart on Route 19 on March 20 where a woman reported that her wallet had been stolen.

Two days later, the woman reported seven fraudulent purchases totaling $707.

Lorenz allegedly used the card at Wal-Mart to buy $49 worth of merchandise only minutes after it went missing. He also allegedly used it at several stores in Butler, including Sheetz, Dollar General, Kmart, Quick Stop and Giant Eagle.

Police looked at store surveillance footage and allegedly saw Lorenz take the wallet out of a shopping cart in the store’s parking lot. They also saw surveillance footage at several of the stores where he was seen using the card accompanied by Kristy A. Faren, 35, of Butler.

Officers are familiar with Lorenz and Faren because they were arrested at Wal-Mart the same day as the alleged wallet theft for attempting to leave the store without paying for $554 worth of diapers. They face misdemeanor charges for that incident.

Faren and Lorenz both were interviewed by township police and provided written statements allegedly admitting that Lorenz took the wallet.

Lorenz was arrested and placed in Butler County Prison on June 10. He posted a $3,000 bail and was released June 21.
