In the driver's seat
CRANBERRY TWP — Scoring 10 runs will win most baseball games.
That's the number New Bedford (Mass.) put up Monday evening, but it didn't come close to matching the output of Butler Township's offense.
BT scored at least two runs in five straight innings and rolled to an 18-10 victory in the winners bracket championship game in the Pony-13 East Zone Tournament at Graham Park.
Butler Township, 3-0 in the event, faces the winner of Monday night's late game between New Bedford and Cranberry Township at noon today. (No results were proviced.)
BT must lose twice to be bounced from the tournament.
The winner advances to the Pony-13 World Series, which will be held in California.
Butler Township smacked 13 hits and made life miserable for New Bedford's pitching.
"We have very disciplined hitters," said BT coach Daryl Patten. "It's something we've worked on since January. To see it pay off today was great."
The most devastating blow dealt to New Bedford came in the top of the sixth inning.
Already trailing 13-8, New Bedford reliever T.J. Landry surrendered a grand slam to Mark Gross.
The ball sailed over the center-field fence and plated Luke Baranchak, Reid Werth and Nick Patten ahead of Gross, making the score 17-8.
Gross ended the game with five RBI.
"It was awesome," said Gross of his grand slam. "I hit a couple of home runs earlier this season, but nothing like that."
Gross began the game playing first base, but he came on to pitch and got the final three outs in the bottom of the seventh.
The win went to BT starter Jesse Savisky, who worked six innings and gave up 10 runs on 12 hits. He struck out three and walked three.
"We saw New Bedford play (Sunday)," said Patten. "We knew they are a great hitting team. Jesse threw a great, great game today. It was his best game this year."
New Bedford's potent offense tallied 13 hits, but the team held only one brief lead when D.Q. Rose's solo home run put his team up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
But Butler Township answered with a three-run home run by Nick Reamer in the top of the second to get BT off and running.
The team scored six runs in the second and two in each of the next three innings before capping its display with a six-run sixth.
New Bedford starter Ty Zell pitched 2Z\c innings and was charged with the loss after walking six batters and giving up seven runs on three hits.
Jake Pringle and Landry followed in relief, but fared no better.
Rose pitched a scoreless seventh for New Bedford, but his team trailed 18-10 by that point.
"We hit the ball well," said New Bedford coach Randy DeBrosse, "but it all comes down to pitching, and, early on, walks hurt us.
"Butler Township kept hammering us," he added.
