Butler teams net baseball titles
The 2020 baseball season is winding down at Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park.
And it's been a pretty good season for Butler.
The Butler BlueSox finished 16-12, edging out the Iron Bucks (15-11) in the Tri-State Collegiate League. Both teams finished at the top of the standings in the six-team circuit.
“That league was incredibly balanced,” said Shawn Manning, who organized the BlueSox and Iron Buck rosters. “Both Butler teams played well.
“We're planning on bringing the teams back next year, if they'll have us. We benefited from some of the premier summer leagues shutting down this year. We'll lose a few players to those leagues, but we should get a lot of guys back.”
The Tri-State Collegiate League decided against a postseason this summer.
“We were running out of time,” Manning said. “A lot of colleges are starting up early and some of these guys are in the process of moving back to school.”
The Butler Twisters, a 17-under team coached by Curt Schnur, won the five-team Iron & Oil League for the second successive season.
All of that league's games were played at Pullman Park.
The Twisters finished 7-1 in the regular season, losing only an 8-5 decision to the Shaler Thunder. The Twisters went on playoff wins of 9-2 over Freeport and 7-0 over the Thunder to repeat as champion.
“All of those regular season games were doubleheaders,” Schnur said. “That game we lost was the first one that night. We won the second game, something like 16-0.”
Most of the players on the Twisters played for other summer teams as well. All 12 players on the roster are from Butler.
“The idea of this league is to give these kids a chance to play some more ball and it enables a bunch of Butler kids to play together,” Schnur said.
C.J. Singleton and David Leslie combined for the shutout in the championship game. Singleton allowed two infield hits in four innings. The pair combined for 10 strikeouts in six innings.
Cooper Baxter homered and singled in the game. Leslie and Carson Knight had two singles each.
Hayden Thompson and Ethan Trettel — both outfielder-second basemen — were the only two players on the roster who didn't spend time on the mound.
“We threw strikes and played well defensively,” Schnur said. “This was a solid fundamental team.”
Also on the Twister roster were Tyler Robinson, Colin Patterson, Mac Schnur, Madden Clement, Lance Slater and James Desmond.
