Clerks at the seven district judge facilities throughout the county will soon become safer.

At their Wednesday meeting, the county commissioners heard John Campbell, facilities and operations director, read three bids for 15 bullet-resistant teller windows to be installed at all district judges' offices.

The windows will have polycarbonate glass, bullet-resistant “speak holes” and pass-through trays for exchanging papers between office personnel and the person at the window.

Four of the windows will measure 24 inches by 36 inches, and 11 will be 36 inches by 36 inches, according to bid papers.

The district judges' offices are in Butler, Butler Township, Chicora, Saxonburg, Slippery Rock, Cranberry Township and Evans City.

The successful bidder of the three who submitted bids for the windows will be approved by the commissioners at an upcoming meeting, as the bids must be reviewed by the county solicitor before being awarded.

The windows will be paid for through an ongoing safety program of the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts.

Campbell expects the total cost to be less than $50,000. There will be no cost to the county.
