Mail theft suspect nabbed
Social media and technology are being credited for helping nab a suspected mail thief in Butler.
Ronald E. Eller allegedly swiped credit cards, a money order and two tickets for a Broadway show that were in mail boxes at neighbors’ homes, Butler police said.
He also is accused of stealing Christmas ornaments in a package delivered to another house.
The 59-year-old Eller of Walker Avenue in Butler faces hearings next month on four separate misdemeanor theft cases filed Thursday.
Police on Christmas Eve initially arrested Eller on felony charges stemming from the Nov. 6 theft of a woman’s renewal credit card taken from the mailbox of her home in the 300 block of East Jefferson Street, according to court documents.
The card was used at several businesses, including a supermarket, six-pack store and Chinese restaurant. In all, the unauthorized charges totaled more than $166.
Police obtained images of the suspect from surveillance video at two of the stores, and on Dec. 20 they posted those photographs on the department’s Facebook page.
Before long, police received calls and messages identifying Eller as the suspect, documents said.
Investigators interviewed Eller, who confessed to taking the credit card. Police said he also admitted that he took a check that was in the same mailbox, forged it and deposited it into his bank account.
Eller is charged in that case with six felony counts of forgery and misdemeanor counts of theft by unlawful taking, theft by deception access device fraud and receiving stolen property.
On Dec. 30, he waived his preliminary hearing on those charges.
Police on Thursday filed four additional cases against Eller, who admitted to stealing mail from other people, documents said.
Among the other thefts was a package of Christmas ornaments, worth $34, that he allegedly took Nov. 1 from the porch a neighbor’s home in the 200 block of Walker Avenue
On the same block and that same day, he took from the mailbox a credit card and a pair of tickets to the show “Once,” valued at $120, police said,
Eller admitted that on Nov. 6 he stole a woman’s $225 money order, the payment for an insurance bill, that she had placed in her Fairview Avenue mailbox for delivery.
Additionally, he is accused of stealing mail Nov. 18 from another woman’s home in the 200 block of Walker Avenue.
Preliminary hearings for Eller in the four latest cases are set for Feb. 3 at the office of District Judge Pete Shaffer. Eller, who is free on his own recognizance, could not be reached for comment.
