Middlesex OKs tax extension
MIDDLESEX TWP — With a short agenda Wednesday night, supervisors met in person to conduct business at their only May meeting.
One item supervisors approved was Resolution 14 of 2020, which extends the payment deadline for county property taxes paid at face value from June 30 to Nov. 30.
The motion stems from the county's plan to extend the pay period.
As previously reported by the Butler Eagle, the county had reviewed several ideas for property tax relief during the pandemic. Extending the face value of taxes instead of the early payment discount period was deemed more helpful to residents.
“That's pretty cool,” said Michael Spreng, supervisor chairman.
Township solicitor Mike Hnath said the extension might not affect many people in the long run.
“I think 90 percent of the people pay at discount anyway,” Hnath said.
Police calls
Randy Davison, the officer-in-charge for Middlesex Township Police Department, reported that police continue to see low call numbers.
At the April supervisors meeting, Davison reported the department handled 202 calls in February and 157 in March.
“For the month of April, we responded to only 113 calls,” Davison said, “which is down.”
Davison said of April's calls, six were alarms, three were misdemeanor arrests and two were reportable accidents.
Davison linked the downward trend in police activity to the state's coronavirus pandemic.
“Due to the virus, everything is slow,” Davison said.
Still, Davison said dropping numbers aren't necessarily bad news for the township.
“I'm not complaining,” Davison said.
