Butler's Independence Day fireworks display could be a short one this year.

City council on Tuesday — the deadline to confirm, change or cancel the city's contract with Zambelli Fireworks of New Castle — agreed to look for $5,000 in the budget for the fireworks and hopes businesses or organizations will donate the rest of the $15,000 needed for the traditional 30-minute display.

Mayor Ben Smith said requests for donations were sent to businesses and organizations earlier than usual this year, but none have donated.

Council unanimously approved a motion directing Councilman Michael Walter, the director of accounts and finance who was absent from Tuesday's meeting, and city clerk Mindy Gall to look for the money in the budget and sign a $5,000 contract with Zambelli if they find the money.

Councilman Jeff Smith, who made that motion, said he hopes the city's contribution spurs businesses or organizations to contribute to the cost of the fireworks display.

The display has cost $15,000 each of the past three years, Ben Smith said.

Denny Offstein, of Denny Offstein Auto Sales in Butler, said the $15,000 display lasted about 30 minutes and estimated that a $5,000 display would last only about 10 minutes.

The mayor agreed with the estimate.

Offstein suggested the city ask Butler Township to contribute. Ben Smith said he would not ask the township for a contribution, but he said Offstein could.

In unrelated business, council addressed several personnel issues.

In the police department, Lt. Benjamin Spangler was promoted to captain, Sgt. David Villotti was promoted to lieutenant and Lt. Chad Rensel was promoted to lieutenant detective. The promotions take effect June 9.

Council accepted the resignation of Treasurer John Grenci. His resignation is effective June 15. He told council that he and his wife are moving out of the city.

Council is accepting letters of interest for the treasurer's position until the next meeting June 27.

Grenci's term was due to expire at the end of the year and he did not run for re-election. Whoever council appoints to the position will serve for a year.

Council agreed to participate in the AARP Senior Community Service Employment Program to find people to work in the parks this summer.

In other business, Offstein was presented a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for organizing the Bicycle Rodeo for the past 25 years.

U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-16th, obtained the certificate, dated June 4, and solicitor Tom Breth and attorney Nicole Lynn Thurner presented it to Offstein.

Offstein said he was humbled and honored to receive the certificate. He said he will continue to give bikes to children for free, but will no longer conduct the rodeo due to the time and expense to repair and store the bikes.

He said people still give him bikes to repair and give away.

In addition, Ben Smith said streets downtown will be closed at 3 p.m. Friday for the Jeep Invasion, which kicks off the ninth annual Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival. The invasion runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Jeeps will be parked on Main Street and side streets.
