After two water quality tests at the closed Summit Elementary School in November showed the water is safe to drink, the Butler School Board will consider Monday reopening the school after the Christmas break.

Superintendent Brian White Jr. sent parents a letter Friday explaining the proposed reopening and necessary changes to the school calendar.

“We’re now at the point where we can work on transition back into the school,” White said Friday, cautioning that the board must approve the reopening plan Monday.

“I anticipate board approval,” Nina Teff, school board president, said Friday.

She said Monday’s meeting will be the first for the newly elected board members and procedures for continued water testing will be discussed, but she believes the reopening plan will receive majority approval.

The schedule adjustments are needed to give Summit teachers enough time to pack their class materials in Broad Street Elementary School in Butler, where they and their students have been since last year when high levels of lead and copper were found in the water at Summit, and unpack in their classrooms in Summit.

“We really think we need three days to move. Teachers need three days to move and unpack,” White said. ‘The teachers have been tremendous. Asking teachers to move a classroom is a lot of work.”

The Christmas break is from Dec. 25 through Jan. 1.

“We should be able to make the move over Christmas break,” Teff said.

To give Summit teachers time to make the move, Summit students would attend Butler Intermediate High School for a day of classes on Dec. 21.

“It’s just for one day so the teachers can pack,” White said.

Parents who don’t want their children attending the Intermediate can keep them home and the absence will be excused, according to the letter.

White said some teachers from Summit will join Intermediate school teachers and principals from both schools in conducting classes for the Summit students on Dec. 21.

Summit students would have holidays on Dec. 22 and Jan. 2, and then return to Summit on Jan. 3. Jan. 2 is the fist day of classes after the break for the rest of the district.

“Jan. 3 would be the first day back at Summit Elementary,” White said.

Jan. 22 and Feb. 16, which are in service days for the rest of the district, would be regular school days at Summit, White said.

The administration will have protocols for continued water testing at Summit before classes resume there. Teff said those protocols will be discussed Monday.

“I think we still have to develop some of those protocols. I’m confident we will do that before we move back in,” Teff said.

She said all the faucets in Summit have been replaced, a water line from a well that is no longer in use has been removed and the valves in the taps connected to the public water line have been replaced.

The results are tests showing clean water.

“We got two full rounds that came back clean,” Teff said. “Hopefully the families are happy. I’m sure they want to get back to their regular school. So that’s good news.”
