Man released after successful bond hearing
A Butler man being held in Butler County Prison on burglary charges was released on pretrial supervision in county court on Tuesday.
Jordan G. Evans Sr., 26, was released by Judge William Shaffer following a bond modification hearing.
Evans was being held in the county prison on $10,000 bail after being charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor theft following an incident in September.
He testified Tuesday that he is unable to post the bail and has three children at home in need of caretaking. Evans said he works for construction companies and is paid under-the-table, and would be living with a friend in Slippery Rock.
Assistant District Attorney Mark Lope said Evans has no prior record and while not opposed to the motion, asked that if released, Evans be released on pretrial supervision with a provision that he have no contact with the victims, which was granted.
The charged were filed by Butler City police after Evans was allegedly sighted carrying a 48-inch flat-screen television in the 200 block of West Brady Street around 3 a.m. Sept. 13.
It was revealed the TV, as well as a video game console, were stolen from an apartment in the city, police said
When confronted by officers, Evans claimed he had “just gotten kicked out of the place he was staying at,” according to court documents, “and (was) taking it to the new place he was going to be.”
The officer let him go. But a half-hour later, police were called to a home on the 300 block of West New Castle Street for a reported burglary, where the resident woke to find his TV and PlayStation 4 video game console gone. He also noticed that the door to his apartment had been forced open.
Police said the resident showed officers text messages from a man he knew only as Jordan. The text sender “admitted to being inside the apartment while (the resident) was sleeping and also admitted to possessing his items,” according to a police affidavit.
Evans was arrested at his apartment in the 300 block of North Washington Street.
He currently awaits further court proceedings.
