Incumbent Democrat Kenny Bonus and Republican challenger Jeff Smith each won seats on city council Tuesday, according to unofficial results.

With all precincts reporting, Bonus led the four-candidate race with 1,159 votes followed by Smith with 1,115, according to results posted online by the county Bureau of Elections.

Incumbent Democrat Kathy Kline, who was running for her fourth consecutive term, received 843 votes and Republican candidate Jim Kemple received 750, according to the results.

“I’m extremely pleased,” Bonus said while joining Ben Smith, the mayor-elect of Butler, at a victory party at Reclamation Brewing on Main Street.

Bonus said the election result came from hard work on the campaign trail.

“I knocked on over 1,830 doors and met many people in different neighborhoods. That’s the only way to get to know people,” Bonus said.

He said he expected the election to be closer than it turned out to be, which is why he knocked on so many doors.

“I didn’t expect such a big margin of victory. I knew I had to go out and meet people. Now I feel like I’m better prepared to understand what our community needs,” Bonus said.

Smith said he was confident about winning after spending Election Day at polls talking to voters.

“I was optimistic today. I got a lot of good feedback from voters at the polls. I think the message of dealing with the neighborhoods resonated with voters,” Smith said. “They’re looking for someone to make changes to bring Butler back. I think the future is bright today.”

Smith said he believes he, Bonus and Ben Smith will work well together.

“I think we’ll help shape the direction of city council and the two others will join us. Everybody will be pulling together,” he said.

Bonus, 29, who was appointed to council in September 2016 to replace Councilman Richard Schontz, who resigned, is the director of streets and public improvements.

A certified public accountant, he owns Bonus Accounting and ConnectWork in the city.

He serves on the boards of many organizations. He recently became engaged.

Jeff Smith, 62, is a former city treasurer and has been working for Vitro Flat Glass, a former PPG facility, in Cheswick for 40 years. He is a trustee at Slippery Rock University. He is married and has six children.

Butler City Council members are paid $2,500 a year.
