ZELIENOPLE — The seventh Brotherhood Memorial Ride is preparing to take to the roads again.

The Harmony Fire District is hosting this year’s motorcycle ride Aug. 28.

It was previously hosted by the Zelienople Volunteer Fire Department, which has merged with the Harmony Volunteer Fire Department.

The ride will begin at the Zelienople Community Park and travel to Pine Township Engine Company in Grove City before returning to the park, about 80 miles total.

“It’s a great thing for emergency responders,” memorial ride co-founder Josh Rader said. “It’s more important now than ever that emergency responders stick together.”

Registration is from 9 to 11 a.m. at the park. The ride will begin at 11:15 a.m.

“The more, the merrier,” Rader said. “We usually have between 150 and 300 bikes, but I’d love to have 1,000.”

The ride raised about $8,000 last year.

Proceeds will go to the fundraising effort to build a memorial skate park in the Zelienople Community Park.

“They (proceeds) are going to go to that every year until that fund is satisfied,” Rader said.

The skate park is planned in honor of Trevor Barkley, Sam Bucci and Elijah Lunsford, three young men who died in a crash in 2010.

They were also volunteer firefighters.

The ride is also dedicated to Kristine Bartman, an Evans City-Seven Fields Regional Police Department patrolman who died in July in a motorcycle crash in Pittsburgh.

Proceeds also will benefit her husband to help with funeral expenses and other costs.

“Just from being on incidents with her, we knew her,” Rader said.

A picnic also will be held at the park after the ride.
