County products help SRU track

The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team received a Butler-County boost over the weekend.

At the Ed Fry Invitational, hosted by Indiana (Pa.), The Rock won seven events, four of them including Butler County natives.

Seneca Valley grad Hunter Williams led the way, claiming first place in the 400-meter dash (49.24 seconds). He also helped SRU's 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams win. The 400 squad also included Butler High product Mason McLaughlin.

The 1,600 quartet featured Slippery Rock High graduate Ethan Geisler.

Not to be outdone, former Seneca Valley High standout Jon Boyd claimed first place in the 110 hurdles (15.31).

• On the women's side, SRU's Kelly Fischer cleared an NCAA provisional qualifying height in the pole vault, managing 3.55 meters to win the event.

Also winning for The Rock were Lexi Arnold (javelin), Cassie Carrow (hammer throw) and Kara Styles (3,000-meter run).

SRU split a doubleheader with visiting Indiana (Pa.) on Sunday, winning the first game 5-3 before losing the second 7-6.Starting pitcher Lou Trivino was the star in The Rock's victory. He threw a complete game while giving up three runs — two earned — on nine hits while striking out three and walking five.Graeme Zaparzynski and Will Kengor both had two hits to lead SRU's offense.In Game Two, SRU was outscored 5-0 over the last five innings before falling to the Crimson Hawks.Reliever John Kovalik took the loss after allowing five runs in 42/3 innings of work.

The Rock received a pair of goals from four different players, but dropped a 13-11 decision at Bloomsburg.Amy Halls, Holly Webb, Morgan Pettit and Casey Quinn each found the cage twice for SRU (9-5, 5-5), which failed to secure a playoff berth with the loss.
