Cranberry cruises, 11-0

WASHINGTON — The Cranberry Township Federation 14 team wasted little time Saturday in setting a tone at the PONY League World Series.

The East Zone/West region champions got off to a flying start in its first-round game against host Washington (Pa.), plating six runs in the first inning en route to an 11-0, six-inning win at Lew Hays Field.

With the win, Cranberry will advance to face Laredo, Tex. — which defeated New Bedford, Mass. in its first-round game — at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

“We went from two outs and no guys on to six runs,” said Cranberry manager Ron Bondo.

“We really didn’t have any expectations. We approached it as we normally would. We felt if we played the way we could, we’d be all right,” Bondo added.

Starter Joel Shaffer and reliever Ryan Donnelly each tossed three innings and surrendered just two singles to Jonathan Spina.

Shaffer also made a big contribution at the plate with a single, triple, home run, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Mason DeHart also homered and drove in three runs, Ross Bondo two hits and three runs and Brad Hensler added two singles.

“We kind of were the marquee game, 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday, and the place was jammed,” Bondo said.

“The energy level was high. We obviously were jacked up and nervous. You never know what will happen,” he added.

Cranberry has enjoyed a tremendous season, one so far where the team has not been challenged often. That does not mean it won’t happen here.

“We were blessed that we were not in a lot of tight games this year,” said Bondo. “The week before playing in the tournament (to reach the PONY World series), we were up 6-0 going into the top of the seventh. We were playing a team from Monroeville. They scored five runs and made it 6-5 and had the bases loaded before we got the last out.

“I’m glad we had that opportunity because we needed to be tested. ... It was nice to see how we would respond,” Bondo added.

Cranberry, which went 0-2 as a 13-year-old squad in the World Series out in California last season, was eliminated by the Laredo team they will see on Tuesday.

“They’re super people. I liken them to Pittsburghers,” Bondo said. “They forgot their baseballs and we saw them at the tournament meeting and gave them our bucket of balls.

“They’re scrappy and play well in all facets of the game. They’re very well coached. It will be whose hits find the holes.”
