Man gets prison for sex assault of minor

A 25-year-old Butler man with a mild intellectual disability was sentenced to jail Thursday for having sex with a minor.

Butler County Common Pleas Judge William Shaffer sentenced Brandon F. Moore to 11 to 23½ months in jail. He has been incarcerated in Butler County Prison since March 21, 2019, which will allow him to be paroled soon.

But Shaffer said he won't be releasing Moore just yet because he has nowhere to go upon his release.

Shaffer noted the probation department is working to help Moore find a place to stay, so that he could be released. He must also serve 25 months of probation.

Moore's offense does not require a sex offender registration.

Moore initially faced felony charges of rape, statutory sexual assault, corruption of minors and misdemeanor charges of terroristic threats, indecent assault and simple assault. But last month, Moore struck a plea deal with prosecutors by pleading guilty to statutory sexual assault in exchange for prosecutors dropping the other charges.

By pleading guilty to statutory sexual assault, Moore admitted to having a consensual sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl when he was 24 years old in 2018.

Butler City Police said its investigation began after state police notified them about the girl's allegations, which surfaced Dec. 4, 2018, while troopers were looking into an unrelated case. Her allegations made to the Butler County Child Advocacy Center led to the charges.
