Man accused of resisting arrest, more
Butler police arrested a Philadelphia man Wednesday night on charges he ran from officers and later tried to slip his handcuffs while being taken to the station.
Anthony L. Williams, 30, was arraigned on misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and loitering and prowling at night, and a summary charge of public drunkenness. He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bond following arraignment.
Police said an officer on vehicle patrol about 10:10 p.m. spotted a man walking in the area of West Brady and North Church streets. The man, later identified as Williams, appeared to be trying to hide himself from police.
The officer circled back, police said, and the defendant ran from the yard of a home on West Brady Street upon seeing the cruiser. Another officer a short time later had the suspect on the ground and had hold of his left hand.
But with his right hand free, police said, the suspect was “reaching underneath the front of his body” in the area of his waistband.
Police eventually cuffed Williams and placed him in the back of a patrol car. Once at the station, police said, officers opened the rear door and found that he was “in the process of slipping his handcuffs underneath his feet.”
Two officers, meanwhile, searched the area where they believe the defendant had run and recovered a magazine for a .40-caliber pistol, police said. The magazine had six rounds in it. Police, however, found no gun.
