Mail-in ballots caught up in county

Wrong forms sent to some

Five more voters received the wrong mail-in ballots, it was discovered Wednesday morning.

Wil White, county solicitor, said at Wednesday's county commissioners meeting that the Republican voters, all in Butler Township, received Democrat ballots for the upcoming primary election Tuesday.

Arrangements have already been made to hand-deliver Republican ballots to the voters, White said.

Two weeks ago, eight Democrats who requested mail-in ballots received Republican ballots.

White said the elections bureau is caught up on mail-in ballots. He said workers have processed 24,769 mail-in or absentee ballots and 500 more that came in Tuesday will be added to that number.

Regarding ballots that have been filled out and sent in, White said the bureau has so far received about 9,000.

That means about 13,000 voters have not yet sent in their mail-in ballots, White said.

Mail-in ballots may be submitted in person to the elections bureau up to 8 p.m. on Election Day, White said.

He said those who requested mail-in ballots who vote at their precincts will have only cast one vote, as each precincts voters will be checked to ensure the voter did not cast a mail-in or absentee ballot.

Voters can no longer request mail-in or absentee ballots, as the final day for doing so is the Tuesday before the election.

Leslie Osche, county commissioners chairwoman, said the new voting machines, which were used in a special election in March, are ready to go and poll workers are trained.

She said an employee of Election Systems and Software, the county's voting machine vendor, has been on-sight since former elections bureau director Shari Brewer resigned a few weeks ago.

Osche said another company official will be in the county helping out on Election Day.

Lori Altman, the county's human resources director, said applications for elections director are being accepted until the end of May.
