Finishing touches are under way at Robin's Home in Butler, so the transitional home for female veterans and their children can open in July.

“We're working on wrapping things up and getting things moved, so we can get the doors open,” said Mary Chitwood, the veteran who founded the home. “Then, we'll set up the home and let people move in. It's just the little details now.”

The home will open at some point in July after the floors are painted and other touch-up work is completed, but an opening date hasn't been finalized, she said.

Most of the work needed to convert the house at 401 E. Pearl St. into Robin's Home was done by volunteers with donated materials, but more donations are needed.

“We need donations for utilities. Our utilities will increase once we open,” Chitwood said.

In addition, nonperishable foods and gift cards for food will be needed for the veterans and their children, she said.

Volunteers from American Legion Post 778 in Butler are painting the floors.

Kennihan Plumbing and Heating of Valencia installed the heating and air conditioning systems for free. The first floor has a dedicated furnace and air conditioner and each bedroom has a small heating and cooling unit, she said.

“With labor and materials, it would have cost $30,000,” Chitwood said.

Two clothes washers and dryers and a deep freezer were donated.

Butler Township Commissioner Sam Zurzolo, a former Marine, donated his time to replace the sidewalk on Elm Street with $1,000 in materials donated by the Butler PM Rotary. Members of a carpenter's union installed interior trim for free. Students from Slippery Rock are also helping with website design.

Chitwood said she is in the process of obtaining a permit to build a rear deck with $1,000 in materials donated by the Legion Riders. Munsch Excavating of Grove City has agreed to build the deck for free.
