Cranberry, Lyndora bow in regional play
BUTLER TWP — They are known as the Allegheny Hustlers, but the Palomino baseball team could have just as easily dubbed itself the Bashers.
Allegheny picked up two victories Friday in the 2012 Palomino Super Regional held at Highfield Park. In wins over Cranberry Township (20-6) and Lyndora (10-4), the Hustlers totaled a combined 30 runs and 32 hits, including nine for extra bases.
“For playing back-to-back games, that's pretty good,” said Allegheny coach Ron Beaumont.
Action in the double-elimination tournament continues Saturday and Sunday, with the final slated for Monday.
Both Cranberry Township and Lyndora were scheduled to begin play in the loser's bracket Saturday morning on separate fields.
In Friday's game, Lyndora fell behind 6-0 after three innings, but stirred things up in the top of the fourth.
Jake Stoner led off the frame with a single and Cory Wheeler followed with a double.
Stoner would score on a fielding error, but on the same play, Wheeler was thrown out at the plate.
The misfortune at home plate did not deter the Lancers, who received an RBI single from Mike Hepler before Adam Schaffner, who had singled himself, scored on a wild pitch. Tyler Crawford capped the inning with a run-scoring double that plated Zac Collins. The Lancers had turned a 6-0 game into 6-4 by sending 10 batters to the plate in the inning.
Unfortunately for Lyndora, Allegheny pitcher Cory Podvasnik was through giving up runs. He allowed just four baserunners over the final three innings. His complete game featured seven strikeouts and two walks.
“Their pitcher threw a great game,” said Lyndora coach Mike Denny.
“He was excellent after the fourth inning,” said Beaumont of his pitcher. “He really buckled down and threw strikes. It was a super job by him and we got him a few extra runs there at the end.”
Indeed, the Hustlers (24-3) scored three in the fifth and another in the sixth off of Lyndora's Matt Baranchak, who worked all six innings.
“I thought Matt threw well,” said Denny. “We just ran into a team that can hit the baseball. No other guy we have could have come in and gotten a different result.”
@BodyCopy Bullet:Like Lyndora, Cranberry found itself in a hole early on.
In a game which began Thursday before being suspended in the third inning due to rain, the Hustlers built a 6-1 lead after two and a half innings, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Austin Logan.
Cranberry tallied five of its runs in the middle innings, including a solo home run that led off the fifth from Dean Ketterer.
But Allegheny's offense was simply too much as the Hustlers feasted on all three Cranberry pitchers — Steven Driscoll, Ketterer and Nick Robinson.
“Our pitchers threw strikes for the most part,” said Cranberry coach Nick DeSanzo, “but everything that they (Hustlers) put in play seemed to find a hole.”
Chris Allison, Allegheny's No. 9 hitter, tallied five singles in the game.
“All of our guys are capable of getting three or four hits in any given game,” said Beaumont. “We've been averaging 10, 11 runs a game.”
