State teams with Pens on vaccine education

Case numbers still on the rise

As COVID-19 cases continue to mount across Pennsylvania, the state is teaming up with the Pittsburgh Penguins to encourage people to get vaccinated.

The Department of Health on Tuesday said the Penguins and UPMC are joining the state's “PA Unites Against COVID” campaign to educate the community about the vaccine. The Penguins will display campaign materials at home games.

Launched in September 2020, the campaign is designed to tell residents they have the power to stop the spread of the virus and provide them with tools and resources to help educate others and join the fight against the virus. The campaign has invested $3.8 million from a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention grant to educate people and fight against the virus, with special focus on marginalized communities.

“Good information leads to good decisions, which is why it is important for us to work with organizations across the state to educate the public about the dangers of this virus and provide accurate information about COVID-19 vaccines,” said Pennsylvania Department of Health Acting Physician General Denise Johnson.

The department said 2,828,907 people in the state were fully vaccinated as of Tuesday. A total of 7,254,446 doses have been administered, including 4,694,374 first and single doses and 2,560,072 second doses.

In the county, 18,294 people have been partially vaccinated and 56,560 people are fully vaccinated.

The 24 new cases reported in the county raise the total to 10,384, and 4,577 new cases across the state raise the statewide total to 1,113,868 since the beginning of the pandemic.

No new deaths occurred in the county, but 77 across the state bring the total to 25,767.

In licensed nursing and personal care homes, 70,221 residents and 14,619 employees have COVID-19. Of the deaths in the state, 13,032 have been residents from nursing or personal care facilities.

About 27,260 of the cases in the state are among health care workers.

There are 2,705 people hospitalized, including 561 in intensive care. The 14-day average number of people hospitalized per day is about 3,600 lower than it was at the peak in December 2020 and lower that what it was at the height of the spring peak in May 2020, but it is increasing.
