Butler police: Teen takes stolen vehicle on railroad tracks, grassy areas during chase
A Butler teenager is accused of driving a stolen vehicle around the city, including on railroad tracks and through grassy areas, Wednesday, May 20, and failing to stop for Butler police.
Tyler Jacob McCleery, 19, was charged Wednesday with one felony count each of fleeing police and receiving stolen property, and misdemeanor reckless endangerment following an incident around 4 a.m.
Police said they received a call about McCleery driving around in a suspected stolen vehicle without a registration plate. Police found McCleery driving a red 2010 Chevrolet Impala in the area of Center Avenue and Hickory Street before he accelerated through a red light down Center Avenue.
Police followed the car down Center Avenue then onto South McKean Street and West Quarry Street before they lost sight of it. It was seen “seconds later” in the area of Negley Avenue and Upper Shore Street before traveling west onto the railroad tracks.
The vehicle left the railroad tracks in the area of Negley Avenue and South Chestnut Street, police said. The vehicle continued on Negley Avenue and traveled through a grassy area at Butler Technologies.
The vehicle returned to the road again on South Washington Street, then traveled back onto West Quarry Street. McCleery lost control of the vehicle on East Quarry Street and stopped at 100 Center Ave., police said.
Police then took McCleery and his passenger into custody. The passenger told McCleery several times to stop, but he refused, police said.
McCleery told police he got the car from a friend and assumed it was stolen. Police then contacted the owner, who confirmed it was stolen.
McCleery’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 1 before District Judge William Fullerton.
