Butler Township couple charged with child endangerment

A 12-year-old boy’s mother and stepfather are facing child endangerment charges following separate incidents last year in Butler Township.

Township police on Tuesday, April 7, charged Hannah R. Mitchell, 40, with misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of children, simple assault and reckless endangerment; and Chad W. Mitchell, 47, with endangering the welfare of children and simple assault.

During a Nov. 6 interview at the Butler County Children’s Advocacy Center, the boy said his mother, Hannah Mitchell, was waving a knife around during an argument with Chad Mitchell. The boy said he tried to move her backward toward a door and away from Chad Mitchell when he felt the knife go across his arm, according to an affidavit.

The incident took place two weeks before the first day of school in August 2025, police said. The extent of any injuries to the boy was not included in the affidavit.

During the same interview, the boy said Chad Mitchell shoved him multiple times into a metal and wooden chair because he didn’t want him to leave the table during breakfast on Oct. 15, leaving him with multiple bruises on his leg, according to an affidavit.

Chad Mitchell told police he grabbed the boy to try to get him to sit in the chair, police said.
