2 more charged following last week’s shooting in Butler
Butler City police filed charges against two more people in connection with a Jan. 19 shooting that damaged two East Wayne Street apartments.
James M. Dent, 22, of Butler, and Shaena R. Hale, 29, of Tyrone, were charged Monday, Jan. 26. Kaleb G. Beish, 22, of Duncansville, was charged Jan. 19, the day of the shooting.
Police accuse Dent of driving Beish just after 1 a.m. to the 100 block of East Wayne Street, where Beish got out of a vehicle and argued with one of four people who lives in an apartment before firing gunshots into the apartment and an adjacent apartment. Dent said he parked around the corner from the apartments and did not see Beish fire the shots, but heard the shots seconds before Beish ran back to the vehicle, police said in an affidavit.
The man Beish argued with told police Beish accused him of beating up a juvenile before drawing a handgun from his waistband. The man retreated into his apartment then heard four or five gunshots. As the vehicle pulled away, the man said he heard several more gunshots, according to the affidavit. Police said they found broken glass from the entry door and multiple bullet holes in the glass window of a door behind the entry door.
A man living in the adjacent apartment told police he heard the initial gunshots, looked outside, saw the vehicle driving away and heard several more shots, according to the affidavit. Police said they recovered three .380-caliber shell casings from the street and a slug from a bedroom.
On Thursday, Beish made a call from Butler County Prison to Hale saying there would be no evidence to convict him if the four people said he didn’t do it, according to Hale’s affidavit.
On Monday, one of the four other people who lives in the first apartment that was shot went to the police station and reported Dent and Hale invited her to Dent’s home to talk about the incident. During the conversation, Hale offered to pay her $1,000 if she didn’t testify against Beish, according to the affidavit.
Police charged Dent with four felony counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied structure and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault; one felony count of intimidating a witness or victim and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault; and four misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment. He is being held in the county jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
