College sports roundup: SRU football slips to No. 25 despite win; Butler grad leads Grove City soccer in win

Despite a blowout victory to snap a two-game losing streak, Slippery Rock University football slid one spot to No. 25 in Monday’s NCAA Division II rankings.

The Rock routed Seton Hill 49-7 Saturday and remain one of two PSAC teams in the Top 25 along with No. 4 Kutztown. SRU is one of three teams with two losses in the Top 25, as well, along with No. 12 Pittsburg State (5-2) and No. 21 Angelo State (4-2).

Weekly honors

Slippery Rock football’s JayJay Jordan was named the PSAC West Division Offensive Athlete of the Week on Monday after he ran for 189 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries in Saturday’s 49-7 win at Seton Hill.

Mars grad Lauren Atwell, a junior middle blocker for Gannon women’s volleyball, was named the PSAC West Division Athlete of the Week after she had 30 kills and 13 blocks during a 3-0 week for the Golden Knights.

Women’s soccer

Tori Stevenson scored a goal, the Butler grad’s team-leading seventh of the year, on five shots on goal in Grove City’s 1-0 win at Westminster on Saturday. The Wolverines improved to 6-4-2, 5-0-1 President’s Athletic Conference.

Slippery Rock blanked California (Pa.) 1-0 to remain unbeaten (7-3-0, 7-1-0 PSAC West). Libby Zacharyasz scored her first goal of the season.

Men’s soccer

Gabin Lonjard scored his first two goals of the season, and Kaden Reynolds notched his fourth in SRU’s 3-0 shutout of California (Pa.). The Rock improve to 4-5-1 (2-2-0 PSAC West).

Cross country

SRU’s women finished third (92 points) and the men seventh (192) at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. Jennifer Cichra led the women with a 10th-place individual finish and a time of 17:44. John Juszynski led The Rock’s men with a time of 25:24 to finish 14th. Edinboro won the girls race with 54 points, and No. 25 Ashland won the men’s race with 20.

Women’s volleyball

Slippery Rock fell to Gannon 3-2 (set scores: 20-25, 22-25, 25-25, 25-17, 15-13) to drop to 9-9 (2-3 PSAC). Callie Chevalier led The Rock with 19 kills, tying her career high, and four blocks. Lauren VonderHaar had six kills and four blocks.

Field hockey

Madison Shomo scored the lone goal in Slippery Rock’s 5-1 loss to Bloomsburg, dropping SRU to 4-7 (0-4 PSAC).
