No residents were injured when an unoccupied multi-family home on Locust Street in Butler caught fire during remodeling work on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

According to Christopher Switala, chief of the Butler Township Volunteer Fire District, the fire started in a first-floor bathroom when remodeling work was taking place. He called the extent of the damage “minor.”

“We’re still investigating, but it appears accidental,” Switala said.

In addition to Butler Township, the City of Butler Bureau of Fire, the VA Butler Fire & Emergency Services, City of Butler Police Department and Butler Ambulance Service responded to the scene.

Switala said this is not the first time that a fire has taken place at the building on Locust Street. In fact, the building was still under remodeling due to a previous fire which occurred in July 2023 and displaced residents from the four apartments.

“There was a fire here a couple of years ago,” Switala said. “All four units were damaged in the previous fire, so they’re still fixing up the building.”
