Cranberry man charged with third-degree murder after June crash

A Cranberry Township man has had charges of third-degree murder tacked onto a host of other charges in connection with a June crash which led to two deaths and one injury.

Israel Tun Cooch, 45, was charged with two felony counts of murder in the third degree during his preliminary arraignment on Monday, July 21.

The charges were added to a list of 20 other charges stemming from the crash, which include two felony counts each of vehicular homicide and vehicular homicide while driving under the influence; and three felony counts each of vehicular aggravated assault, vehicular aggravated assault while driving under the influence and accidents involving death or injury while not licensed.

According to a police affidavit, the crash occurred near the intersection of 11th Street and 7th Avenue in Beaver Falls shortly before 4 p.m. June 29.

When emergency crews arrived, they noticed a Dodge Ram truck and a Nissan Altima with heavy damage.

The passenger of the Nissan, a 23-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene; the driver of the Nissan was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital and later died of his injuries; and a 48-year-old female pedestrian was found pinned underneath the Nissan and taken to a local hospital with severe injuries.

Through video footage obtained from Tun Cooch’s dashcam, officers from the Beaver Falls Police Department determined that the truck, driven by Tun Cooch, was traveling north on 7th Avenue at a high rate of speed. According to the affidavit, the video showed Tun Cooch passing by a red traffic signal at the intersection before plowing into the Nissan.

At the scene, officers reported noticing the smell of alcohol from Tun Cooch’s breath, and spotted an empty Modelo beer bottle on the floor of the driver’s side of the Ram truck. Tun Cooch had no passengers in the truck, police said.

A search of Pennsylvania’s driver records revealed that Tun Cooch was not licensed to drive in the state at the time of the crash.

Tun Cooch is currently in Beaver County Prison in Aliquippa and has been denied bail. His preliminary hearing has been set for 8:45 a.m. Thursday, July 31, in front of District Judge Dirk A. Goodwald.
