Events heat up at Moraine, McConnells Mill in May
The month of May marks the midpoint of spring, and as temperatures heat up, so does the pace of events at Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks.
May 1: McConnells Mill is hosting a walk through the Hell’s Hollow valley from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., giving visitors an opportunity to experience the park’s many wildflowers at night. The route of the walk is about a mile long.
May 10: Naturalist April Claus leads the “Leap into Herpetology” walk at Moraine State Park starting at 10 a.m., which will offer insight into the differences between various types of reptiles and amphibians. Part of the event will feature a “herpetology hike” with hikers on the lookout for reptiles. All participants should meet at Pavilion 6 at the McDanels Launch Area on the North Shore. This event is appropriate for those age 7 and up, but all children must be accompanied by an adult.
May 16: The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission is hosting a Family Fishing event at the Pleasant Valley Beach area of Moraine starting at 6:30 p.m. This is a great way for families to bond while learning important life skills. No fishing license is required and all equipment will be provided. Pre-registration is required, and adults and children must be paired, as this is a family event.
May 24: Moraine is hosting a “Warbler Walk,” a classic spring bird-watching walk starting at 8 a.m. This walk will mainly be focused on finding warblers. Participants should meet at the Old 422 Launch. Binoculars are recommended, and the office does have some on hand.
May 31: Moraine park naturalists will be hosting a Cove Paddle up Lake Arthur starting at 8 a.m. Visitors will learn more about the history of the park and the man-made lake. Pre-registration is required. This event is for ages 12 and up. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Life jackets are required. Kayaks and gear are provided for those who don’t have their own, but due to increased demand, sign-ups for using park kayaks are limited to two per year.
