Slippery Rock school board selects parent to fill vacancy

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — The Slippery Rock Area School District board voted Wednesday, April 3, to appoint Carl Aglio to fill the unexpired term of Kelly Lake, which ends in December 2025.

The open seat is in Region 1, which encompasses Slippery Rock and Mercer townships and Harrisville. Lake resigned from the school board effective March 11, at which point the board began accepting letters of interest for the position.

Alfonso Angelucci, superintendent of the school district, said four people in Region 1 applied to the position, and on Wednesday, the current school board members interviewed each one.

In his interview, Aglio said he’s interested in being on the school board because he has children currently enrolled in the district, and he has been volunteering with different school groups since moving to the area about seven years ago.

Aglio said he has lived across the country, working for political leaders in places like Arizona and Colorado, before moving to Australia and Dubai for contract work positions. Aglio told the board he believes politics should not be involved in decision making on a school board.

Through his experience in politics, Aglio also said he has knowledge of implementing policy that he hopes to bring to the school board.

The eight members of the school board discussed the candidates following interviews and picked Aglio after narrowing it down to him and one other candidate. Overall, the school board appreciated Aglio’s answers to their questions.

“We’ve always said that, I mean the goal is to keep personal opinions and politics out of it, and I like where he is there,” said school board member Diane Double.

School board member Mark Taylor appreciated Aglio’s talk of having his children attend schools overseas.

“I like his international experience,” Taylor said. “That could be an interesting contribution.”

Angelucci said the district will contact Aglio on Thursday morning, and if he accepts, he will tentatively be sworn in at the next school board meeting.
