Helen Esther Hay, 99, of East Butler, passed away on Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, at Newhaven Court, in Butler.

She was born on Aug. 21, 1924, to the late Leroy Buckley and Esther Jack Buckley.

Helen graduated from Butler High School and Butler County Community College with a degree in nursing. She was a member of East Butler Presbyterian Church, where she was the church treasurer, a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, and a church organist. Helen started and ran the Kid’s Night Out program for many years. She worked at Butler Memorial Hospital for 10 years, retiring in 1994, when she was 70 years old. Helen also loved gardening, traveling, needlework and spending time with family.

Helen is survived by two sons, Daniel (Jennifer) Hay and Edward (Mary Ann) Hay; a daughter, Kathleen Kramer; a daughter-in-law, Esther (Gadsby) Hay; in addition to numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence L. Hay Sr., whom she married on Jan. 12, 1944, and who passed away on Aug. 13, 1983; one son, Lawrence L. Hay Jr.; as well as one sister and two brothers.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of Amedisys Hospice Care and Newhaven Court for their wonderful and compassionate care of Helen in her final days.

HAY — Friends of Helen Esther Hay, who died Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 124 E. North St., Butler.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at East Butler Presbyterian Church, 900 Randolph Ave., East Butler, with the Rev. Dr. Mary Kitchen officiating.

A private interment will take place at Mount Irwin Cemetery, Kennerdell, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to East Butler Presbyterian Church, 900 Randolph Avenue, East Butler, PA 16029.
