PennDOT announces changes for Middlesex Township on Sept. 7

Starting Thursday, Sept. 7, motorists driving through Middlesex Township can expect traffic changes as work progresses on the Balls Bend Safety Improvement project.

Motorists can expect the opening of two jughandle intersections, a new State Route 228 alignment in both directions from the new bridge to State Route 8, a new traffic signals and the closure of Park Road, PennDOT announced Wednesday.

Two new jughandles will open for drivers to change directions on State Route 228 at 8 p.m. Sept. 7. Drivers will use a ramp on the right side of the road.

According to PennDOT, the rain dates for the jughandle opening are Sept. 8 and 9.

Additionally, Park Road will be closed from Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m.through Oct. 21 as work begins on the new alignment of the road and the connection of to the newly constructed State Route 228, PennDOT said.

Motorists will be able to access State Route 228 from Park Road using a 4.4 mile-long detour.

The $26.5 million safety improvement project is expected to be completed in January 2025 by Independence Excavating.
