Judge approves 7 new voting precincts

Thousands of county voters will vote at new polling places in the Nov. 7 election.

A county judge Tuesday approved the creation of seven new voting precincts in five townships for the upcoming election.

President Judge S. Michael Yeager approved the new precincts that were proposed by the Bureau of Elections to encourage voting by reducing long waiting lines at polls and balancing the number of voters in the precincts.

During Wednesday’s county commissioners’ meeting, the election board will vote on polling places for the new precincts.

The court approved the bureau’s request to increase the number of precincts in Adams Township from three to five, Cranberry Township from nine to 11, Jackson Township from one to two, Middlesex Township from two to three and Connoquenessing Township from one to two.

Election Bureau Director Chantell McCurdy testified about the rational for proposing the new precincts. She said no objections were filed for any of the changes.

After the hearing, she said the bureau will send letters to all 50,000 voters in each of those townships to notify them about the new precincts.

The Election Bureau website has a list of streets in each precinct and precinct maps.

In Adams Township, which has 11,873 registered voters, the existing Precinct 1, which has 3,744 voters, will not change. Precinct 2 will have 2,250 voters, precinct 3 will have 2,800 voters, precinct 4 will have 1,600 voters and precinct 5 will have 1,500, McCurdy said.

Connoquenessing Township’ 3,195 voters will vote in either Precinct 1, which has 2,000 voters, or precinct 2, which has 1,100 voters.

Many of the 24,736 voters in Cranberry Township will not see any changes in November, but the precincts West 1 and West 3 were split to create West 7 and West 8. West 1 will have 1,650 voters, West 3 will have 2,250, West 7 will have 1,771 and West 8 will have 1,430.

All 4,079 voters in Jackson Township used to vote in one precinct. On Election Day, 2,400 voters will vote in Precinct 1 and 1,600 will vote in Precinct 2.

In Middlesex Township, which has 5,264 voters, the name of one precinct was changed and one precinct was created. The name of the North Precinct was changed to Precinct 1 and its 2,262 voters will continue voting in the existing polling place. Precinct 2 was split into precincts 2 and 3. Precinct 2 will have 1,800 voter and Precinct 3 will have 1,400 voters.

McCurdy said the Pennsylvania Department of State will be notified about the new precincts.

Election judges and poll workers for the new precincts worked in the primary as training in anticipation of the approval of the new precincts, she said.

The county will buy new voting machines for the new precincts, she added.
