Police: Altercation in city involved knife, gun

A man with a machete was able to disarm someone who brandished a gun during an altercation, but both men were charged by city police Wednesday, Aug. 2.

Anthony L. Williams, 33, and Devin L. Parker, 34, both of Butler, were charged following an encounter on Broad Street, where police said Parker brandished a machete and Williams brandished a gun.

Parker was charged with felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor simple assault, and summary disorderly conduct. Williams was charged with felonies possession of a prohibited firearm and altering identification of a firearm, misdemeanor simple assault and summary harassment.

Williams was placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Police were dispatched to Broad Street around 4:20 a.m. Wednesday for report of a fight.

Witnesses told police they saw Williams walking his dog when Parker approached him with a machete. According to documents, Parker said he saw Williams beating the dog before the fight began.

Police said Parker was swinging the machete during the fight, and Williams handed off his dog leash to a bystander before brandishing a gun.

Parker told officers he was able to knock the gun out of Williams’ hand.

In a later interview, Williams told police he knew nothing about a gun. A gun was later recovered from where the alleged fight took place, and police said some serial numbers were scratched off.

Documents showed the gun was found to belong to someone in Williams’ residence.

Williams suffered a laceration on his right forearm during the altercation, according to police.

While transporting Parker from the scene, police said Parker said he had “a right to defend himself.”

Preliminary hearings for Williams and Parker are scheduled for Aug. 14 before District Judge William Fullerton.
