Rock drops marathon game to Mercyhurst

Slippery Rock University’s baseball team lost a 20-inning game to Mercyhurst by a score of 2-1 Sunday in Erie.

The Lakers’ Vince Stutz decided matters with a single that plated Matt Christopher in the bottom of the 20th inning. It was Mercyhurst’s third victory over SRU (10-7, 0-3) in two days.

The Rock took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning when AlexRobenolt’s sacrifice fly scored Jon Kozarian, but the Lakers tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

SRU starting pitcher Luke Trueman pitched a gem, allowing one earned run on six hits in nine innings while striking out eight and walking three.

Relief pitchers Michael Kitko, Robert Herr, Tanner Esposito and Gino Marra combined for 10 scoreless innings. Marra was in his fifth inning of work when he was pulled in favor of Jake Norris with one out and Christopher on third base in the 20th inning.

Norris surrendered the single to Stutz and Marra was tagged with the hard-luck loss.

SRU tallied just five hits in the game with Colin Cain singling twice. Kozarian added a triple.

Mercyhurst used eight pitchers in earning the win.

The second game of the doubleheader was postponed and rescheduled to be played on Tuesday.

Softball

After dropping a 6-3 decision to host California on Sunday, The Rock rebounded to take the nightcap 7-4.

Alexsa Hurd and Aubrey Mansfield both had three hits to lead SRU’s 11-hit attack. Hurd scored three times while Mansfield’s day included a double and two RBI in the win.

Hurd worked six innings for the victory and Chloe Sharman pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the save.

SRU (12-12, 3-3) hosts Mercyhurst in a doubleheader on Wednesday.
