Griffith, Baggetta, Lacey shine for Butler

Drew Griffith is at it again.

The Butler junior distance runner — named Gatorade Pennsylvania Cross Country Athlete of the Year last week — won the 1,600 meters Saturday at the SPIRE Scholastic Showcase indoor track and field meet in Geneva, Ohio.

Griffith ran the event in 4 minutes, 07.31 seconds, the fastest 1,600 indoor time in the state so far this season. His time moved him into second place on Butler’s all-tine list for the indoor 1,600, trailing only CJ Singleton’s 4:05.07.

Megan Baggetta broke the Butler girls indoor triple jump record Saturday at the Youngstown State University high school meet. Her jump of 37 feet, 2.25 inches ranks fourth in the state this season.

The Golden Tornado’s Landon Lacey won the boys 400 meters with a time of 49.97 seconds, second-fastest all-time at Butler and No. 5 on the state’s indoor list this season. Butler’s boys 4x200 relay team of Christopher Rubcic, David Graef, Aaron Stebick and Lacey ran a 1:33.05 to win that event.

Butler travels back to Penn West Edinboro for the fourth and final regular season meet this Saturday.

Slippery Rock’s Tyler Arblaster broke his own school record in the indoor 400 meters, running a 50.99 to place third at the YSU meet. Arblaster also broke the school’s indoor 60-meter sprint record with a run of 7.40 seconds. That was 11th at the meet.

Dustin Joyce took third in the boys triple jump with a leap of 40-5. He also took fifth in the long jump with an 18-7.5.

Girls Basketball

Anna Waskiewicz scored 15 points and Ava Walker added 10 Saturday as North Catholic (17-3) won its 11th straight game, 48-40, over Pine-Richland.

The Trojanettes built a 14-point lead by halftime before securing the victory. North Catholic hosts Knoch on Thursday.

Boys Basketball

Colton Thomas led three Moniteau players in double figures, scoring 13 points Friday night in a 56-46 win over Cranberry. The win was the Warriors’ sixth in seven games.

Aydan Jackson added 12 points and David Martino scored 10.

Carter Blystone and Jaxon Salata scored goals for Butler, but the Golden Tornado took a 5-2 loss to Bishop McCort recently. Parker Worsley and Nate Holland had assists for the Golden Tornado.

EJ Delaney made 19 saves in goal. Butler returns to action at 9:15 p.m.Thursday against Greater Latrobe at the Nevin Arena.
