A team of Mars Area High School students earned first place in the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens Fairchild Challenge.

The contest, part of the “National Challenge: The Next NASA Mission Patch,” asked participants to design a NASA mission patch commemorating the “VEG-05” plant growth experiment to grow Red Robin tomatoes aboard the International Space Station. Teams were required to submit an explanation of their inspiration, including the story behind mission patch designs and any symbolism used.

Juniors Cecelia Crowley, Addison Girdwood and Annelie Gustafsson researched previous NASA mission patches, and junior Mira Ramanathan designed a patch in the shape of a tomato, featuring a shuttle carrying a tomato astronaut and carboxyl constellations. The team’s entry received an overall score of 191.6 points and will be submitted to NASA, which will select the overall winner of the national challenge.
