Butler girls show out against visiting Moon
BUTLER TWP — As far as team meets go, the Butler girls swimmers did as well as they could in hosting Moon Wednesday night. The Golden Tornado placed first in all dozen events in a commanding 87-45 victory.
“A lot of it really has to do with numbers, too,” Butler coach Troy Kroll admitted of the girls’ solid showing. “I’m proud of them, how they did tonight ... It gains some confidence that you’re able to swim some good events and swim them consistently. We’re not rested, we’re not ready to go to the meets. We’re in the middle of training, so it’s good to have some good meets.”
He was pleased with the effort that his crew turned in at this point in the schedule, first and foremost.
“I think really, overall, this is a good mid-season meet for us,” he said. “They came in, swam hard, finished every race, and that’s really what I’m expecting out of them at all times. No matter what — if you’re behind, ahead, wherever you’re at — is to finish each race and finish it hard with everything you have.”
The Golden Tornado were aiming to get back on the right track after losses on both the boys and girls sides at North Allegheny last week. As Kroll mentioned, the workload of preparing has been steady.
“I think we’re working really hard,” said Ally Smith, one of the team’s captains. “As we get on later in the season and we start tapering more, I think we’re all going to do a lot better ... Just getting through the hard sets that he gives us and showing up every day and lifting has really helped us.”
Junior Emma Pflugh (200-yard freestyle), sophomores Abigail Vance (200 IM, 500 freestyle) and Addison Vance (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke), and freshman Rylee Pflugh (100 breaststroke) all swam the fastest times in individual competitions for Butler. Freshman Addyson Traggiai and senior Annabelle Turner were on winning relays. Sophomore Grace Persichini won the one-meter diving event with a score of 168.55.
Smith came out on top in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle swims and was part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay.
“She is one of those people that she is just a sprinter,” Kroll said of Smith, one of only two Butler seniors. “Tall, strong, very powerful stroke. She’s just able to get off the block and then hard the whole way.”
The Golden Tornado’s boys team wasn’t as lucky, bowing to the Tigers by a 91-69 score. However, Keaton Matteson won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events and Ben Grossman the 100-yard breaststroke. Dashiell Thieme came just two-hundredths of a second from placing first in the 200-yard individual medley.
The Golden Tornado swim against Knoch Tuesday night. The team will celebrate its Senior Night during that meet.
