Police: Rite Aid employee takes thousands in pills
A Rite Aid employee admitted to stealing prescription pills and selling them at a profit, according to charges filed Wednesday.
Butler Township police charged Angelina M. Holben, 36, of Renfrew, with felony theft, nine counts of felony acquisition of a substance by misrepresentation, 10 counts of felony drug sales, misdemeanor acquisition of a substance by misrepresentation, 10 counts of misdemeanor drug possession, and two counts of misdemeanor use and possession of drug paraphernalia.
On Nov. 7, 2022, a supervisor at Rite Aid in Point Plaza reported to police that pills were missing from the store’s stock. He said October surveillance footage showed a female employee taking bottles of lorazepam and clonazepam and placing them in her pocket. The amount missing from the supervisor’s records totaled $2,681.
The employee, later identified as Holben, admitted to her supervisor that she committed the theft. She told police she had been using her role as a pharmacy associate to take pills since August 2022.
According to police, Holben admitted to removing pills at least once a week from the stock of lorazepam, clonazepam and diazepam and hiding them on her person. She told officers she never took from someone’s prescription.
Police said Holben would sell the pill bottles for $70 or more to a male who said “she was working at the perfect place to steal them.” Holben told police she used the money to pay lawyer’s invoices.
Following an interview, Holben provided police with a sealed bottle of 100 lorazepam pills and another bottle with 200 clonazepam, three lorazepam and two diazepam pills.
Holben also was accused of taking Ritalin, tramadol, Xanax, Ambien, phenobarbital and modafinil from the pharmacy.
A preliminary hearing for Holben has not yet been scheduled.
Clonazepam is used to treat seizures. Diazepam is used to treat anxiety, muscle spasms and alcohol withdrawal. Lorazepam is used for serious seizures that do not stop, and also to treat anxiety.
