Vehicle thefts lead to charges against 2 men

Two Pittsburgh men are cruising toward charges related to stolen vehicles, a police chase and a fire in a spree across two counties, according to authorities.

Dylan M. Kunkle, 21, and Darin J.D. Carter, 26, are scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday by District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz on charges filed Tuesday by Cranberry Township Police and the Pennsylvania State Police Western Regional Auto Theft Task Force.

Both are charged with felony counts of theft, possessing stolen property and criminal conspiracy.

Carter additionally is charged with felony counts of conducting a chop shop and altering a VIN number.

Kunkle additionally is charged with felony counts of fleeing from police, criminal mischief, arson and reckless burning.

A third person, a minor, also was charged, but criminal records of youths in Pennsylvania are restricted from public record.

According to police, Kunkle and Carter kicked off their alleged criminal activity May 26 by stealing two vehicles from Manheim of Pittsburgh Auto Auction, which operates in Jackson Township.

Police said the pair stole a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude, valued at $26,585, and a 2016 Ford Mustang, valued at $25,585. The auction’s security personnel told officers the theft happened around 3:10 a.m.

“Two vehicles left the (Route) 528 lot without stopping to scan the vehicles out,” police said. “One had the lights on, the other did not.”

Police said the Cherokee Latitude was spotted July 14 by Brentwood Police, who pursued the vehicle.

“The pursuit was dangerous and was terminated due to high speed,” police said.

Later that day, Baldwin police and firefighters found the vehicle on fire on the 2400 block of Michael Drive in Pittsburgh.

“The vehicle sustained severe fire damage throughout,” police said. “Based on the observations of the first arriving firefighters, they determined that the fire originated in the front-passenger seat area which consumed the driver and passenger seats down to the metal of the vehicle.”

After gathering more information, police began watching Kunkle and Carter. Police said officers saw an unoccupied Jeep Wrangler parked in the alley near Kunkle’s house.

Police said Kunkle and Carter had stolen another vehicle July 2, a 2007 Jeep Wrangler, valued at $11,500, from a property in Baldwin.

Police then found Carter in possession of the Mustang. Carter had bought a junked version of the car and swapped the VIN number with the stolen one.

Police said that during recorded interviews, Kunkle and Carter admitted to their offenses.

Following their arraignment Tuesday, they will be issued bonds and scheduled for preliminary hearings.
