Renfew man accused of stealing car and prompting police pursuit

EVANS CITY — A chase involving multiple state troopers Tuesday morning ended at the intersection of Myoma and Peters roads in Adams Township with an arrest and charges for a Renfrew man.

Later in the afternoon, David T. Johnston, 26, entered the district court shirtless, bloodied and wearing a medical bracelet and handcuffs.

Police said Johnston stole a vehicle from a Forward Township home and led multiple troopers on a chase encompassing about 12 miles. Multiple police cruisers were damaged in the chase.

"Several state police cruisers at this point are out of commission," said Assistant District Attorney David Beichner while discussing Johnston's bond.

District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz arraigned Johnston on felony counts of fleeing and theft, as well as misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence, resisting arrest and reckless endangerment.

Johnston was taken to Butler County Prison after being issued $150,000 bond.

According to charging documents, a woman called 911 at 7:37 a.m. to report her black Mercedez-Benz sedan stolen from her home on the 200 block of Reibold Road.

“(The vehicle owner) stated they were following the vehicle in a friend’s vehicle,” police said in the affidavit.

Police said they picked up the pursuit in Evans City after spotting the vehicle near Harrison Street. Police said a traffic stop was attempted and ignored.

Police said they made multiple attempts to stop the vehicle by using their vehicles and spike strips. Police said throughout these attempts and at other times during the chase, Johnston swerved into oncoming traffic and drove various speeds.

Troopers were able to stop the vehicle at a stop sign at Peters Road due to troopers “boxing him in” and traffic in front of him, police said.

Police said Johnston refused to exit the vehicle and resisted being pulled from it.

“While troopers were attempting to pull the defendant from the vehicle, the defendant accelerated the vehicle forward with multiple troopers hanging inside the window pulling them forward a short distance in an attempt to elude being pulled from the vehicle and taken into custody,” police said.

Police said they eventually were able to remove Johnston from the vehicle. Johnston had pieces of gravel stuck to the skin on his back while being arraigned.

Police said Johnston admitted to EMS that he had smoked meth before the incident, and police had smelled alcohol on his breath.

Johnston is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Aug. 23 before Marcinkiewicz.
