Indiana County man charged for using counterfeit bills in 5 counties
Local charges have been filed against an Indiana County man who police said has been passing counterfeit bills in Butler and four other counties.
An arrest warrant was issued Monday for Jason L. Wagner, 35, of Penn Run, after state police filed charges including three counts of felony forgery and three counts of misdemeanor theft.
According to charging documents, the investigation began with a call May 24 at the Dollar General in Franklin Township. Police said the store’s manager said a man used five counterfeit $100 bills to load onto a Green Dot prepaid card.
Police said the Dollar General manager told them the same man passed or attempted to pass counterfeit money at other Dollar General locations in Butler, Westmoreland, Lawrence, Armstrong and Indiana counties.
Police later identified two other instances where Wagner allegedly used or tried to use counterfeit bills in Butler County.
Police said on May 15, Wagner tried to use four $100 counterfeit bills along with other smaller denominations.
The manager confirmed the $100 bills were fake by using a money pen, police said.
Police said Wagner again tried to pass counterfeit bills June 4, and police were able to identify him through the transaction. Police said Wagner tried to use five counterfeit bills to load onto a Green Dot prepaid card.
Jason Wagner was the registered owner of the card, police said.
Police said investigators in Lawrence County also spotted Wagner’s vehicle leaving the scene of a counterfeit bill incident there.
Following Wagner’s arrest, he will be arraigned, issued a bail amount and scheduled for a preliminary hearing before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.
