Maier nets 8 points in Roundball Classic

Butler senior Makenna Maier scored eight points, contributed two steals and two assists Saturday as the Girls Class 6A All-Stars defeated the Class 5A stars, 83-63, at Saturday’s Roundball Classic hosted by Geneva College.

Maier sank two 3-pointers in the game. The 6A all-stars were coached by her father, Mark Maier.

“We had 14 girls on our roster and I was impressed by how attentive and coachable these girls were, ” Coach Maier said. “All eyes were on the coaches during timeouts, at the end of each quarter and halftime.

“With only one practice (Tuesday) and the game, there wasn’t much coaching involved. All we did was tell them to talk on defense, take good shots and have fun. Then we stayed out of their way.”

Makenna Maier is headed to Saint Vincent College. Seneca Valley’s Olivia West — also on the 6A team — tallied six points and two 3-pointers and had five rebounds. She is headed to Columbus State, a Division II school in Georgia.

Peters Township’s Journey Thompson, headed to Arizona State, tallied 10 points for the 6A stars. Mt. Lebanon’s Ashleigh Conner, headed to St. Louis University, scored nine points.

Ava Black of Mars played for the 5A stars and had three points, five rebounds and two assists. There were seven players in the game heading to Division 1 colleges.

“It was enjoyable coaching that kind of talent,” Coach Maier said. “it was like a hockey game, with girls taking the court for four-minute shifts. They are so into the game ... They knew to make the extra pass, talk on defense ... The girls became pals after a very short time.”
